Love Egbugomo: Why Syemca and Chike's New Single is the Season's Anthem (Valentine Special)
Emerging songwriter and singer born Chukwuemeka Ezekpeazu (Syemca) teams up with his younger brother Chike Ezekpeazu Osebuka (Chike) to release a splendid hit-single titled "Love Egbugomo". The single is a buzzing hit on social media, which has garnered over seven million streams across multiple streaming platforms and charted well on Nigeria: iTunes (No. 5), YouTube (No. 23), and Spotify (No. 59) amongst others.
This link-up sprouts nostalgic moments in the R&B fusion with Afrobeats renaissance in the early 2000s with duos and trios — reminiscent of Bracket and Styl-Plus who shared a brotherly bond beyond the music. For The Ezekpeazus, from a little resemblance, to a similar vocal texture, to songwriting styles and note patterns; their chemistry is like P-Square's pedigree. Coming months after Syemca released 'BIPOLAR' EP, he seals his discography for 2025 with this love anthem.
"Love Egbugomo" which is from the combination of an English and Igbo word denoting "love has killed me" in an exclamatory utterance. Chiké explores thematically all he could do for the affection of his woman, while Syemca layered his verse and chorus on the transformation the romantic bond brought him. Syemca's verse was written in honesty, while Chiké rode the wave of his verse in flattery. The latter is peculiar to the Igbo culture; this signifies their admiration of beautiful women.
Produced by DeeYasso the fast-tempo instrumental leans heavily in Afropop, although Syemca defines his style as — Aria-pop which merges highlife, classical, and soulful elements into several kinds of Afrosounds. His 'BIPOLAR' EP layered these sub-genres. The piano work in the intro gives the single an emotional impact, as the single loop of EDM kick interweaves across the track. The interlude adds flavour to it.
While Chiké elevated the track with a refrain, Syemca's flow distorted his verse as he aligned more with the beat than his initial established flow. This looks like an over-engineered performance as he could develop his verse technically with a better flow considering the instrumental.
For this Valentine season, the two-minute track is a go-to for those satisfying evenings after work.
