BIRTHDAY IN BED BY ROY OC CHUKWU

Amina and Bolu in the hospital

“Bolu, ordinarily, people see birthdays as that particular day when those who know them show appreciation by sending prayers, well-wishes, and, above all, celebrating them. It is such a special day—a time when birthday cards, text messages, phone calls, and gifts pour in from loved ones. A birthday party is planned by the celebrant because, culturally, every birthday is believed to be a day we all agree to be older and wiser. It is also an exclusive day set aside for us to shower ourselves with praise, take ourselves for treats, blow out the candle on our birthday cakes, seek pleasure, and get emotional,” Amina said.

Bolu was almost in tears as Amina continued. “We’ve derailed from the real essence of what birthdays were—the reflection on all that happened in the past year, thanksgiving to the Source that made life possible, how we grew up and not just grew old, and pondering what the future might hold.” Amina paused. “Nowadays, the celebrant makes a social appeal to everyone to send a token of love in monetary terms and even to repost their birthday photoshoot, often in a compelling manner,” she added. “Look at me, Bolu,” Amina sighed with relief. “My thoughts about life and birthdays have taken a paradigm shift. Who would have thought my perspective could change in a moment? The road accident made me a changed person. In a way, I am grateful for that. As you know, I was one of only two survivors of that fatal accident.”

“Are you not going to host a party for your survival and birthday?” Bolu asked. “I am not thinking about the unnecessary hype and excitement birthday parties come with, nor the noise and hedonism that fill the mind. I am too cold, and as I lie on this sickbed with these bruises and fractures, I only think of those who have been in my life—the memories they brought me. I have learnt to truly appreciate everyone during my birthday. Birthday culture has to take a paradigm shift. I will be calling, texting, gifting, sending out prayerful wishes, because you all made my stay on earth so remarkable,” Amina said and paused for a while. “Happy birthday to me!” she declared.

“Bolu, please unplug my phone so I can reach out to my colleagues, family, and friends,” Amina said, pulling Bolu from her thoughts. “Happy birthday to you, Amina,” Bolu replied. “You have made me understand birthdays from a clearer lens. I have learnt a birthday without noise. ”She walked over, unplugged the phone, powered it on, and handed it to Amina. Bolu remained quiet and sombre as she sat beside her close friend. Everything Amina had spoken of was new to her. She pondered it long after.
