Africa's Storytelling Tradition: Cedozy's "Nnamochie" Review

"Nnamochie": A Soulful Tribute to African Heritage

Fast-rising Nigerian rapper and songwriter, Cedozy, also known as 'Cedozy D Trapa', has released a new single titled "Nnamochie". "Nnamochie" is an Igbo word that literally means "my grandfather". In this piece, he takes listeners on a journey through history, touching on the slave trade, colonialism, and the emergence of religion. He uses this song to appeal to every Black person to learn about their history.

The soft tempo rap beat produced by Odg Beatz complements the poetic lyrics, which commemorate the transatlantic slavery era. Cedozy's cadence and tone convey a deeper message of pain. On the chorus, he calls out to his grandfather, expressing distress, fear, and abandonment, evoking a melancholic emotional response from listeners. This heartfelt piece speaks to the Black experience, particularly for Igbos who understand the language and culture.

In the second verse, Cedozy raps about his reality, referencing a disturbing video he saw on social media that showed the inhumane treatment of Africans across the ocean at that time. He links the aftermath of slavery and colonialism to the current trend of internet fraud in some Western countries.

While the track's Igbo language may limit its reach, translating the lyrics into English, French, and other languages could help broaden its impact. The intro had a slightly disjointed signature that disrupted the flow, but Cedozy regained control by maintaining the song's thematic foundation. The untapped mixing made the piece raw and natural.

Cedozy is a promising talent in the industry, and with the right support, could become a symbol of conscious music. He conveys unabashed emotion through "Nnamochie", both in the song and his performances on stage and social media. Cedozy, whose signature tag boldly proclaims him “another problem from the East Coast,” pours unfiltered emotion into “Nnamochie.” With this track, he raises the question: is he truly becoming the next problem from the East?
