Side Quest or Legacy Move? Cubana Chief Priest Enters Music to Prove a Point

Money Na Water: Cubana Chief Priest’s Herculean Leap Into Music With ‘More Money'

With respect to history, Cubana Chief Priest has always been the ultimate go-getter. Dating back to his rift with his former boss — Obi Cubana in 2020, leading to their fallout, to the establishment of his solo empire under his own name brand — he built undeniable success from the jump. Building on that pedigree, his jump into music was sparked by the very public animosity between Burna Boy and his close associate, Davido. Siding firmly with his friend, Cubana Chief Priest vowed to drop albums and win awards. Marking his grand entrance into the cutthroat entertainment world — while running his thriving hospitality and nightlife empire —he debuts with the 'More Money' single, with Davido serving as executive producer.

What Is Better Than Money? Cubana Chief Priest Answers With ‘More Money'

Produced by Dawie, the fast-tempo beat leans heavily on gyration and ogene, which is predominant in Igbo culture. For the global stage, it is an Afro-Gyration, a sub-genre of Afropop.

This track features three fast-rising artists BoyPee, Hyce, and Brown Joel whose silk vocals lit the energy up while they delivered creative hooks and verses. They display a style of songwriting only artists with deep-level chemistry could share. The chants in the chorus add flavour to the already elated verses.

They sing and brag about hustle, money, success, wealth, and good living. The whole theme centers on the rhetoric, "what is better than money? More money". Cubana Chief Priest's mantra "money na water, no be chochocho" was inscribed on the record. They used melodic tunes to lace the harmonic rhythm of the beat which resonates with their audience. This keeps listeners coming back to the record.

CP

Cubana Chief Priest has proven to be courageous and bold. However, he still needs to polish his songwriting skills and penmanship, vocal training, and the right orientation for this music business. While he has taken on the herculean task of music to prove a point to Burna Boy, surviving in the industry and having an impact will be burdensome — and may pull focus from what he does best. I hope he does not end up, in retrospect, wishing he had let sleeping dogs lie.
