Heartbreak, Healing & Hums: A Review of Earboy Vinz's Sophomore EP by Roy OC Chukwu

Baby Vinz — A Melancholic Leap Into Maturity

It's no doubt that this underground act, Earboy Vinz found success with his debut EP — Sit Down And Keep Quiet [SDAKQ]; which garnered streams across the globe. He didn't sit back to leave the hustle with his previous record as this sophomore extended play was released just six months after his debut EP. This EP leans heavily into rap and trap genres. He called it 'Baby Vinz' and it aligned with the message he passed: vulnerability, heartbreak — as a baby would always experience. The four-track EP has a great tracklist and thought-provoking themes. Here is a breakdown of the thematic expressions.

Meddling in electric kicks and synths, the instrumental creates room to convey Vinz's mellow vocals as he raps, hums the hooks, and sings the chorus.

Similar to his unreleased tracks from his catalogue, Earboy uses 'Leaked eyes' to reach out to our broken guys in the society we live in. Guys who have resorted to smoking, drinking and suicidal thinking immediately after exiting a relationship with their partners who are now their exes.

What would have led to this break up for some of these guys? Was it being too open to their partners which set them up for judgement and criticism? Weren't they supposed to be there for each other – to support emotionally, mentally and spiritually in some cases, right? But, it also didn't go as planned. They were not in for such relationships to that extent. They couldn't contain the past of their partners because they acted strangely at times from certain incidents from way back. Dem no contain nam (Kontenam).
Just like a rope tied from one end to the other end, once it's cut would never remain the same. Here, "Peace needed" solidifies this saying as regards whatever story you just read now and what they have realized was the truth; those relationships can never remain the same. I have grown past the pain and now I have learnt to accept what happened. I just embraced my peace.

I do not have so much to say to anybody. Thus, I embark on this journey to music. Whatever it costs me, I would pay. Until the table turns, my "Casio" would be for my debts. Till then, let the passion take over.

These were my perspectives in the ten minutes, fifty-four seconds  (approximately 11 minutes) duration. The way the tracks were interwoven and all told a cohesive story. Earboy Vinz's vocals illuminate the EP, however, some tracks suffer from off-beat delivery.

Baby Vinz, a project which transitioned from what Earboy Vinz was to what he is. The introspective and melancholic resonance in "Baby Vinz" EP shows Vinz has eaten severely and deeply from Omah Lay yet, he maintained his unique style through hums and adlibs.
